Prof. Ki-Bum Lee and his team (https://kblee.rutgers.edu/) in the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology at Rutgers University report the development of a novel nanobiosensor for Ultrasensitive Electrochemical Detection of Mutated Viral RNAs with Single Nucleotide Resolution Using a Nanoporous Electrode Array (NPEA). Using a unique natural phenomenon comprising metal ion-intercalation into the targeted mismatched double-stranded nucleic acids. Besides, to enhance the sensitivity of the biosensor through the extension of the activated surface area, Au NPEA was developed by using laser interference lithography (LIL) technique, electrochemical deposition, and etching process. The researchers (https://kblee.rutgers.edu/) have demonstrated a highly sensitive and straightforward electrochemical detection of SARS-CoV-2 RNAs. The detection of single sequence RNA mutations was also validated electrochemically. In short, our developed nanobiosensor provides a potential platform technology capable of detecting diverse nucleic acids and their mutation variants for point-of-care (POC) biosensing.
