  • Associate Dean, Recruitment and Retention
  • Research Synopsis: As Associate Dean at the School of Graduate Studies, Evelyn leads recruitment and retention initiatives. Her efforts emphasize broadening participation and promoting successful degree completion in STEM PhD programs. An important focus is the pathway from undergraduate to graduate school for students from diverse backgrounds. Evelyn is the Founding Director of the RISE (Research Intensive Summer Experience) at Rutgers experiential program for undergraduates who are selected from a highly competitive national pool. Each summer, a substantial fraction of RISE Scholars work under the guidance of matched CCB faculty mentors. Many of the Scholars have returned to Rutgers for PhDs in CCB labs. Evelyn partners with NSF and NIH funded training programs at Rutgers, serves as liaison to multi-institutional consortia, and develops collaborations with Primarily Undergraduate Institutions and Minority Serving Institutions. As a National Research Mentoring Network Facilitator, she leads training for students and faculty to hone culturally aware mentorship skills. Prior to her role at SGS, Evelyn served as CCB teaching faculty. She taught and coordinated undergraduate courses including Chemistry 159-160 and 161-162 as well as pathway courses such as Chemistry 133, 134, and Solid GEMS 161-62. She is excited to continue to work closely with CCB in her efforts to promote inclusive excellence in the graduate community.
