To mark Black History Month, the Rutgers Office for Research interviewed four prominent scholars at the university, including Michelle Stephens, English and Latino and Caribbean studies, and Gene Hall, chemistry and chemical biology. "There needs to be more visibility and recognition of the contributions that chemists of color have made to society," Hall said. Stephens urged students "to not be afraid to invest in the life of the mind, to devote one's studies to understanding oneself and the world we live in, and the meaning we are making of our present."
