Patrick Holland.tifUsing Dinitrogen to Generate Ammonia and Anilines

N2 reduction has been a longstanding target of study in chemistry because of the compelling goal of utilizing abundant, cheap atmospheric N2 for chemical synthesis. Most current research aims at converting N2 to ammonia, and we will start by discussing some new systems for ammonia formation at low temperatures. We will then move to new mechanisms that lead to organic products from N2. Specifically, we have identified an iron system that can perform sequential C-H activation and N-N activation, in a cyclic reaction that converts N2 and arenes into products with C-N bonds.
