Paul Smith"Lessons from the ICD Battery: Structural Requirements of Silver Ions for Electrochemical Energy Storage in Mixed Metal Silver Oxides"

Electrodes must increasingly support faster electron transport as the devices they power become more demanding. Towards this goal, the development of materials containing Ag+ is pursued for fundamental interest because, when reduced, the product can contain a network of atomically dispersed, conductive Ag0 particles that support fast electron transport throughout the whole bulk. The impacts are potentially tremendous: merely 0.3% volume reduction of Ag+ results in 1,000,000x decrease in electrical resistance of silver-vanadium-oxide-phosphate materials closely related to the current implantable cardiac defibrillator (ICD) battery electrodes. However, limitations prevent the extension of these fundamentals into the next generation of robust, rechargeable high-rate batteries beyond the ICD. This talk will describe the effects of Ag+ concentration and structure on electrochemistry when dispersed on the atomic level throughout MnO2 and MoO3, with impacts that reach into contemporary vanadium and iron oxide systems.
