Daniel Kuroda“Elucidating the dynamics and structure of complex organic solutions by time resolved IR spectroscopy

Complex organic solutions are flourishing in the literature because of their applications in synthetic chemistry as well as their use as new designer solvents, electrolytes, etc. From a fundamental perspective, complex solutions remain challenging to characterize because of their structural and dynamical heterogeneity. Moreover, liquid solutions have short length-scales interactions with dynamics on femtosecond to picosecond time-scales, which make them difficult to characterize with many conventional spectroscopies. In this talk, we present our efforts to explore the structure and dynamics of complex organic solutions using FTIR and 2DIR spectroscopies as well as theoretical methods. In particular, the presentation will focus on describing both a “simple” organic solution composed of amides in chloroform and a complex organic solution: deep eutectic solvents (DES). In both cases, we explore the impact of the molecular structure of the component on the solution dynamics and interactions, where we find that trivial modifications to the solution component carries drastic modifications to the solution molecular structure. This presentation will also discuss the implication of our findings on synthetic chemistry and extraction.
