Huang Jiayi“Preparation and Bioapplications of Rare Earth-Based Nanoparticles”

Owing to the unusual magnetic and optical properties associated with f-electrons, rare earth elements are suitable for creating multifunctional materials, while nanoparticles provide an ideal platform that display the unique, versatile properties of rare earth elements within single particles through the judicious selection of particle matrix and dopants. The recent accomplishments in rare earth-based nanoparticle synthesis has aroused the interest of scientists to further explore their biomedical applications. In this talk, I will present several examples of the application of rare earth-based nanoparticles as probes for imaging tumors in vivo, as well as some general rules about tailoring the relaxometric properties and upconversion luminescent properties of rare earth-based nanoparticles that are potentially useful for biomedical imaging applications. Considering the broad potential applications of rare earth-based nanoparticles in the biomedical field, a reliable histochemical staining method was introduced for probing the distribution of rare earth-based nanoparticles in different organs and tissues, which is imperative for evaluating the targeting ability and safety profiles of rare earth-based nanoparticles.
