General Curriculum

Minimal course requirements for students in the molecular biophysics training program are as follows:

COURSE CREDIT HOURS

Biophysical Chemistry 3
One other BioMaPS Core Course 3
Advanced Electives in Molecular Biophysics 6
Required Courses in Graduate Discipline 0-21
Molecular Biophysics Seminar 2
Laboratory Rotation 3
Ethical Scientific Conduct 1
Graduate Research 37-58
Total Credit Hours (Minimum) 74

Students normally devote four semesters to completing course requirements and 3-4 years, partially overlapping with course work, on thesis research. Students begin the laboratory rotation in the first year and choose a thesis advisor by the beginning of the second year. All trainees enroll in the molecular biophysics seminar and deliver formal presentations. Students also have the opportunity to participate in specialized laboratory and departmental seminars, short courses, and symposia offered at Rutgers and UMDNJ. A typical student curriculum, year by year, follows:

YEAR 1
Biophysical Chemistry
One other Molecular Biophysics (BioMaPS) core course
Laboratory Rotation
Molecular Biophysics Seminar
Ethical Scientific Conduct
Required Disciplinary Courses

YEAR 2
Two relevant advanced electives
Required Disciplinary Courses
Molecular Biophysics Seminar
Comprehensive Examinations
Thesis Research

YEAR 3
Thesis Research
Oral Qualifying Examination

YEARS 4-5
Thesis Research
Seminar & Defense
