Written and/or oral examinations admitting students to candidacy for the Ph.D. are taken within traditional academic disciplines. The thesis is reviewed by a faculty committee, generally made up of professors who share common research and/or academic interests with the student. The student works closely with the dissertation supervisor who assumes primary responsibility for the student's research training. Research progress is monitored by student-supervisor conferences, written progress reports, and research group presentations. The student also meets regularly with the members of the thesis committee who provide additional scientific guidance. The student will deliver a final seminar and will defend the thesis in a public oral examination as required by the University. Students who complete the program are qualified to assume careers in research and/or teaching.
