WRMBL Barnstead Autoclave Procedure

1. Ensure that the autoclave has water in the reservoir, located on the top of the unit. It should contain approximately 7 liters of water. Do not fill past the metal fill line.

2. Select a cycle to use for sterilization. For sterilizing empty containers and test tubes, run the wrapped cycle. To autoclave microbiological media use the liquids cycle.

3. Use autoclave tape, located in the desk opposite the autoclave. This will ensure that the cycle ran properly.

4. When sterilizing liquids, use a secondary container. This will prevent boil-over from clogging the drain. AGAR SOLUTIONS MUST BE PLACED INTO A SECONDARY CONTAINER. Leave bottles and jars open during sterilization (loose cap or foil top), and never fill containers more than 75% full of liquids.

5. At the end of your cycle, use the autoclave gloves located in the desk opposite the unit to remove hot items. Use care when handling liquids, as they may be superheated and “bump” during movement.
